Yamila Viana

Founder of NYC Tango School

Yamila Viana

Yamila Viana is a highly accomplished dancer who began her training at the age of five. By eighteen, she had become a prima ballerina with the Argentine National Ballet, performing on Argentina’s most prestigious stages, including Teatro Colón, Teatro Cervantes, and Luna Park.

She began her tango career in Buenos Aires, immersing herself in the roots of the art form before taking her talent to international stages. Her career has spanned Latin America—Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia, Mexico, Paraguay—and Europe, with performances in Spain, France, Switzerland, and Italy. While in Italy, she worked with IALS in Rome, performed for RAI, and served as an artistic director in Venice.

In 2010, Yamila moved to New York City, where she expanded her career into Argentine Tango. In 2015, she became the U.S. Tango Champion in both the Stage and Salon categories—an exceptional achievement that highlighted her versatility and mastery of the art form. She is also a two-time finalist at the World Tango Festival and Championship in Buenos Aires.

That same year, she founded NYC Tango School—the first dedicated tango school in New York City. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, the school has become a cornerstone of the American tango community, with students consistently reaching top placements in major competitions across the country.

In 2023, NYC Tango School was selected to represent Argentina at the prestigious World Culture Festival in Washington D.C. Today, Yamila is widely recognized as one of the top tango coaches in New York, known for her artistic excellence, cultural depth, and unwavering commitment to training the next generation of tango dancers.
