Ticket Information & Attending Performances

Buying Tickets on this Web Site

Shopping for opera tickets is easy – you can browse by title and then select the performance date, or browse the calendar and click on the date of your choice.

PLEASE NOTE: On domestic orders, there needs to be 7 days between receipt of the order and the performance date for the Box Office to mail tickets to purchasers. Orders received with fewer than 7 days between order date and performance will be held at the Box Office for pick-up. Foreign orders will not be mailed; all Foreign orders must be picked up at the Box Office. Tickets held at the box office may be picked up at any time not later than one-half hour before the performance. If you have a question concerning your ticket order, please allow 8 hours from the time you placed the order before contacting the Box Office at (212) 870-5570.

All orders are subject to a handling fee—$12 per subscription order, or $5.50 per ticket on single and student ticket purchases.

All ticket sales are final. Once orders are processed no refunds will be made.

Tickets to evening performances must be ordered on our Website before 3:00pm on the day of the performance, and no later than 11:30am for a matinee performance. Please call the Box Office at

Ticket Sales

Standard Series
Standard Series are comprised of four, five, or eight preselected operas. The more operas you buy, the more you save. See Advantages of Subscribing.

Create-Your-Own Series
Enjoy the flexibility of choosing the operas and dates you like best. Create-Your-Own Series are made up of three to eight operas of your choice, and also offer substantial savings over individual tickets. See Advantages of Subscribing.

Director's Choice Series
Choose these series for new and hallmark City Opera productions selected by the General and Artistic Director. These series put you up close and personal with the production and include admission to the corresponding Production Dialogues (a reservation form will accompany your tickets). In addition to these benefits, Director's Choice subscribers enjoy all the Advantages of Subscribing.

TARGET® Family Series
City Opera is thrilled to announce the second year of our exciting partnership with TARGET. Our popular family workshops will be held on the Grand Promenade of the New York State Theater, allowing more people to join all the fun! These interactive hour-long pre-matinee workshops with City Opera musicians, singers, and teaching staff will introduce families to the exciting world of musical drama. Lunch is included at all workshops as well as a year-long subscription to Time Out New York Kids. Adults purchasing a subscription will receive one free subscription for a child ages 6 – 12. Additional children’s subscriptions may be purchased at a 50% discount. Family Series subscribers enjoy the same advantages as all other subscribers.

Time Out New York® Intro To Opera Series
Check out this series of friendly, fun, info-packed discussions with City Opera insiders, designed to demystify opera. We’ll explore its basic components, and point out what to look and listen for in the performance that follows. Each 45-minute talk is followed by a light refreshments. Group Tickets
Groups of 20 or more always save at least 15% off regular ticket prices, and enjoy a host of benefits including group dining and hotel options, backstage tours, and the opportunity to host an event on the Promenade of the New York State Theater. For more information on Group Sales, click here.

Big Deal! Tickets

A limited number of $16 standing room tickets are available only at the box office the day of performance. Standing room tickets go on sale when the box office opens: Monday-Saturday 10am, Sunday 11:30am.

Return/Refund/Cancellation Policies

New York City Opera does not offer refunds for any reason. Only subscribers may exchange tickets. See Advantages of Subscribing for details.

Ticket Donation

If a subscriber is unable to use his/her tickets, he or she may donate them back to New York City Opera for a tax benefit. The ticket donation must be made, via telephone or mail, no less than 2 hours prior to curtain time. All donated tickets—whether donated by phone or mail—must be mailed to the New York State Theater Box Office before a receipt can be issued. Receipts are mailed in January.

Families and Children

New York City Opera welcomes children over six years of age. Particular productions may be of more interest to younger operagoers than others; for information on an opera's suitability, please call the box office at (212) 870-5570.

City Opera's TARGET® Family Series are hour-long programs, especially designed to introduce families and young people to various aspects of opera performance and production. Through interactive workshops featuring City Opera musicians, singers and staff, kids ages 6 to 12 will discover this exciting world of musical drama. Our popular family workshops will now be held on the Grand Promenade of the New York State Theater, allowing more people to join all the fun! Separate tickets are required for each adult and child attending the workshop. A complimentary lunch is included with the price of admission and the workshop is FREE and only available to TARGET® Family Series subscribers. Standing Room

A limited number of standing room tickets are available for each performance. Standing room tickets are available at the box office on the day of the performance. Tickets are $16 and limited to one per person.

Cellular Phones, Beepers, and Wristwatch Alarms

Due to the disturbance they may cause the performers and other audience members, we ask patrons with cellular phones, beepers, and wristwatch alarms to turn them off prior to the performance and after each intermission.

Cameras and Recording Devices

The photographing or sound recording of any performance, or the possession of any device for such photographing or sound recording inside the theater is prohibited by law. Offenders may be ejected and liable for damages and any and all other lawful remedies.

Latecomers

Latecomers will not be seated until intermission or, on rare occasions, when an appropriate interval exists. Latecomers are allowed to stand at the back of the theater. All late seating is at the discretion of house management.

Dress Code

New York City Opera has no dress code. When you come to our performances, you will see people in a range of styles of attire, from blue jeans to gowns. We recommend clothing appropriate for a professional setting.

Smoking

In compliance with New York City Department of Health regulations, smoking is prohibited in all public areas of the New York State Theater.

Food and Lodging

Pre-performance dining is available at Panevino Restaurant located across Lincoln Center Plaza, in Avery Fisher Hall. Panevino's Northern Italian fare entrees are priced similarly to those of the Promenade Café, which is no longer operating at the New York State Theater. Panevino can be reached at (212) 874 – 7000.

*Exchange Policy


City Opera subscribers in the Premium Orchestra, First, Second, Third, and Fourth Ring (Rows A-F) can exchange tickets free of charge within the same section of the house up to 24-hours in advance. Subscribers in the Front Side Orchestra, Side Orchestra, and Fourth Ring Side can exchange tickets to any other performance up to 24-hours in advance but not within these sections due to limited availability. If you would like to purchase a subscription package in the Front Side, Side Orchestra, or Fourth Ring Side sections, you can exchange any of your tickets by either paying the difference into another higher priced section of the house or into a lower priced section of the house where the difference in price is retained by City Opera as a donation.
