American Voices

November 5, 2009



Celebrate New York City Opera's return to the newly renovated David H. Koch Theater at a star-studded concert featuring performances by Measha Brueggergosman, Amy Burton, Joyce Castle, Anna Christy, Joyce DiDonato, Lauren FlaniganMarc Kudisch, Samuel Ramey, and Talise Trevigne.

This festive evening of selections from American opera and musical theater will feature works by Barber, Bernstein, Bolcom, Floyd, Gershwin, Golijov, and Stravinsky.  The evening will also include a performance by special guest Rufus Wainwright and New York City Ballet will perform to an excerpt from Adams's "Hallelujah Junction."

American Voices is approximately 100 minutes with no intermission.

Visionary director Christopher Alden reimagines this masterwork in a thrilling new production which explores the intersection of dark eroticism and strict Spanish-Catholic tradition in the early 20th century. Rising star Daniel Okulitch makes his City Opera debut as the notorious antihero.

Esther

Hugo Weisgall’s electrifying Esther returns for the first time since its sold-out world premiere in 1993. Audience favorite Lauren Flanigan stars as the brave young queen. Based on the Biblical tale, Esther abounds with political and spiritual resonance for our times.

New York City Opera's Emmy Award-winning production of Puccini's Madama Butterfly by Mark Lamos conjures all the romance of this tragic saga of a faithful geisha and a reckless American naval officer in a beautiful and beloved staging.

L'Etoile

March 18, 2010 - April 1, 2010



This sparkling comic opera was a favorite of Stravinsky, Debussy, and Ravel.  Director Mark Lamos creates a witty, stylish production of a rare operatic gem, befitting this zany caper about a madcap king, an astrologer, and a hapless peddler.

Performed in French with English supertitles and one intermission.

Partenope

April 3, 2010 - April 17, 2010



Handel’s intimate comedy Partenope, a gender-bending tale of royalty and romantic entanglements, had its acclaimed New York premiere at New York City Opera in 1998 in this touching and fanciful production by Francisco Negrin.
