Prima Donna
February 19-25, 2012
With this, his first foray in opera, Rufus Wainwright has “written a love song to opera, soaked in the perennial operatic themes of loss, betrayal, delusion and nostalgia, and saturated in the musical styles of opera’s golden age” (The Times, London). Rising star Melody Moore sings the tour-de-force role of a once-acclaimed opera soprano seeking to return to the spotlight. After thrilling audiences in the UK and Canada, Prima Donna now receives its U.S. premiere under the direction of Tim Albery.
Commissioned by Manchester International Festival, Sadler’s Wells, Luminato: Toronto Festival of Arts and Creativity, and Melbourne International Arts Festival.

Così fan tutte
March 18-24, 2012
Having captured the imaginations of audiences and critics alike with his direction of City Opera’s 2009 production of Mozart’s masterful Don Giovanni, Christopher Alden, “known for revisionist stagings of the staples” (The New York Times), returns to lead this, the second opera in his Mozart/Da Ponte cycle. The cast for this new production will once again feature a selection of today’s most promising young talent, enacting the cynical test of two sisters’ fidelity.

Continuing its focus on resurrecting the operas of Handel, City Opera expands its exploration of the Baroque to include the New York premiere of Georg Philipp Telemann’s 1726 opera Orpheus.
